The Texas City "Y" Oil Spill Response : Ways You Can Help

At this time, we are no longer accepting additional volunteers to join the mailing list. We have a large number of volunteers currently in the database that will be utilized initially, as these volunteers have been patiently waiting for activation. Our sincere thanks to the nearly 1,000 persons who have joined our mailing list as potential volunteers. This is a great resource that we can use either during this response or future oil spills. The Volunteer Coordinator has been e-mailing the volunteers on the mailing list daily updates on the incident response, volunteer status, and encouraging them to report any oiled wildlife that they see.

You can still help! Please report any oiled wildlife sightings to (888) 384-2000. Cell phone photos of oiled wildlife can also be emailed to:  wildlife@co.galveston.tx.us  These observations help our responders by saving time and providing care to injured or oiled wildlife as soon as possible.
Under Federal Law, only those individuals with special training and certifications are permitted and prepared to clean up oil, oiled debris, or wildlife. These individuals are working under Unified Command and have been assigned to those tasks accordingly. Those who do not hold the special training and certifications affiliated to this incident are not permitted to handle or collect oil, oiled debris, or wildlife. These laws and regulations are in place to protect your health and safety which is our top priority.

This GBF "Bay Area Response Team" is in collaboration with the United States Coast Guard (USCG), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the Texas General Land Office (GLO).
